Certified Medical Assistant
The CMA shall provide personal medical services to all Active-Duty beneficiaries within the capabilities normally granted to a Certified Medical Assistant/Medical Assistant (CMA/MA).
The CMA/MA shall meet or exceed the industry standards by established principles, practices, and ethics of the CMA/MA Profession. The CMA will provide professional services to the U.S. Coast Guard.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Contractor shall perform a full range of professional CMA/MA concepts and practices on
site, using Government facilities, equipment, and supplies to various patients. All aspects of
CMA/MA shall be commensurate with the capabilities of the provider and the Medical
Department.
- Assess patient's needs for CMA/MA care and plans for medical interventions, assess the effectiveness of the interventions, and alter the medical plan and interventions appropriately.
- Administer oxygen, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medication.
- Prepares patients for surgical and or diagnostic procedures.
- Prepares, operates, and monitors specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, defibrillators, etc.
- Inventory medicine and drug stocks to ensure adequate supplies and controls.
- Provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur in addition to regularly scheduled appointments.
- Greets and receives patients to the clinic, discreetly ascertains the nature of their illness or condition and directs them to appropriate care.
- Responds to requests for routine non-medical information such as duty status. Receives and screens phone calls.
- Files and maintains Healthcare records. Files health care reports in health records. Maintains the Health Record checkout file. Inputs daily patient information into the Coast Guard Healthcare Information Systems.
- Required to use all Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc., to track data, generate reports, and prepare presentations.
- Reviews and routes incoming correspondence.
- Schedules and tracks consultations for specialty care.
- Maintains referral log and notifies patients of appointments.
- Reviews and verifies patient eligibility for care by Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS) computer system guidelines.
- The CMA/MA performance will be monitored through a joint function of the Health, Safety, Work-Life Service Center (HSWL SC) Quality Improvement process and the contractual demand for services. CMA/MA productivity is expected to be comparable to other medical department staff assigned to the same facility and authorized to the same scope of duties.
- Provide instruction to clinic staff on an ad hoc basis.
- Prepare and submit appropriate documentation as specified in applicable regulations.
- Become familiar with the TRICARE medical benefits program through the completion of appropriate nonresident training and offer benefits counseling to Coast Guard beneficiaries regarding utilizing their TRICARE benefit.
REQUIREMENTS
The provider of CMA/MA services shall possess and maintain for the duration of this agreement:
- A certificate or associate degree as a CMA/MA from a state-accredited program and 12 months of experience within the preceding 36 months, or,
- Certification from a military medical assistant (i.e. Health Service Technician, Hospital Corpsman) a school, and 12 months of experience within the preceding 36 months, or 36 months of experience within the preceding 60 months as a medical assistant in a private practice, and completed the requirements for certification. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies, part of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, accredits four certifications for medical assistants:
Required Certifications
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Healthcareer Association
- Maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) for the Health Care Provider by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) or the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
Credential Review. The contractor shall submit the following credentials
A current resume including AT LEAST the following information:
Degrees earned.
Professional Experience.
Career history.
Professional Training/Courses attended in the past two years.
Professional organization affiliations and memberships.
Previous work references, including the name of the organization, number of years rendered,
Address, and name of the point of contact with the telephone number.
Awards and certifications received.
Copies of:
- A certificate or associate degree from an accredited school of CMA/MA or certification from a military medical assistant school i.e., HS HM (a “Polaroid” picture is acceptable as a copy);
- A current unrestricted certification from an accredited certifying agency, if applicable.
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) for the Health Care Provider by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) or the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP);
- At least three (3) letters of recommendation from recent employers addressing CMA/MA services.
